How Does SmartJailMail Video Visitation Work?
It is known that VideoVisits in SmartJailMail actually provides a two-way and real time video visitation system. This system can be used to communicate with your loved one in prison directly in their house within the prison, jail or detention center.
In some locations, you may be able use a lobby kiosk at the facility to visit for free when you’re scheduling a local/ on-site visit. If you choose for remote visits from home, it will cost you about 50 cents per minute and will be scheduled in 15 minutes or 30 minutes increments.
How to Schedule a Video Visitation?
It’s pretty easy to schedule a video visitation, as long as you already have a SmartJailMail account. You can choose to schedule a video visitation in two ways, including on-site video visits and remote visits from home.
If this is your first time using the SmartJailMail system, you may need the guide to schedule a video visitation. No worries! We’ll show you the processes of scheduling a video visitation with the SmartJailMail system. Here’s for the process:
1. Sign Up
In order to schedule a video visitation with SmartJailMail, you will need to create an account in SmartJailMail first. Creating a SmartJailMail account is very fast, simple and completely free. SmartJailMail will require you to select a username and password to identify your account with some basic information.
After submitting your registration, SmartJailMail will send an email containing a verification link. Once receiving a verification email, you need to open the email and select on the verification link to verify your account.
Creating an account or searching for inmates in SmartJailMail will not cost you. To sign up for video visitation, you can also do it in the lobby kiosk. To activate your account, you may need your phone to receive the activation code through text-message or email.
2. Make Connections
After you have built an account, you will need to look for inmates to connect with. After you have found the inmates you search for, you can then send them a connection request. After that, the inmates will have to approve the connection request before you can schedule a visit.
3. Schedule a Visit
After you are connected with inmates at a location where the SmartJailMail Video Visitation is available, you can then use the website to schedule a video visitation. As we’ve mentioned, there are two ways to schedule a video visitation:

On-Site Video Visitation
After you are connected with an incarcerated individual at a location where SmartJailMail system provides kiosks in the lobby, you will then use the visitation section of the website to schedule a visit. Scheduling on-site video visits is free of charge.
Here’s how to schedule an on-site video visit!
- First, you need to log into your SmartJailMail account.
- After logging in, you can choose ‘Visitation’ from the services menu.
- Then, you need to choose the ‘Schedule a Video Visit’ button.
- After that, choose the inmate you want to visit with.
- Make sure to choose the ‘Local Visit’ option. Selecting this option is free of charge.
- In the following section, you must choose how long you want to visit. (Some facilities offer video visitation in 15 or 30 minutes)
- After that, you can choose the date you want to visit. To note, your video visitation can be scheduled up to seven days in advance.
- Here, you need to choose the time you want to visit.
- Make sure to confirm the details of your visit by pressing the ‘Confirm and Schedule Visit’ button.

After making a schedule, you will view the details of the visit on your list of scheduled visits on the website. On the day of your visit, you can arrive at the local facility roughly 10 minutes before your visit is scheduled to start.
Approximately one hour before your video visitation, SmartJailMail will send you a text message or email to remind you of your visit that will include a Visitation QuickCode. You can then enter a Visitation QuickCode on the lobby kiosk to begin your video visit.
If you do not receive a Visitation QuickCode, you can also log into SmartJailMail with your username and password or also use the lobby kiosk to schedule another visit. Once your video visits, SmartJailMail will wait until the inmate is also logged into their kiosk.
After you and your loved one are connected, the video session will begin. Of course, the video visitation will automatically end when time runs out.

Remote Visits From Home
In addition to scheduling an on-site video visit, you can also schedule a video session remotely. To schedule a remote video visit, you must have any credits available in your account. If you don’t have any credit, you can purchase credits first prior to scheduling your remote video visit. However, the cost of credit will be different in each location.
Here’s how to schedule remote video visitation from home!
- First, you need to log into your SmartJailMail account.
- After logging in, you can choose ‘Visitation’ from the services menu.
- Then, you need to choose the ‘Schedule a Video Visit’ button.
- After that, choose the inmate you want to visit with.
- Make sure to choose the ‘Remote Visit’ option. Selecting this option will cost you with credits.
- In the following section, you must choose how long you want to visit. (Some facilities offer video visitation in 15 or 30 minutes)
- After that, you can choose the date you want to visit. To note, your video visitation can be scheduled up to seven days in advance.
- Here, you need to choose the time you want to visit.
- Make sure to confirm the details of your visit by pressing the ‘Confirm and Schedule Visit’ button.
After making a schedule, you will view the details of the visit on your list of scheduled visits on the website. On the day of your visit, you need to log into SmartJailMail.com using your home computer or laptop. About ten minutes prior to your scheduled start time, the status of the visit will change to ‘Ready-Begin Visit’.
Make sure to select the ‘Begin Visit’ option when it appears to start your video visitation. Once you start your video visitation, the SmartJailMail system will wait until your loved one is also logged into their kiosks. After you and your loved one are connected, the video session will begin. Of course, the video visitation will automatically end when time runs out.
